iOS and Android Landscape in June 2014

Heya Metrics fans! Welcome (back) to a new edition of the iOS and Android Landscape! This time around it is June's turn. On June the 23rd Google released a new patch version for Android 4.4, namely Android 4.4.4. You can find it's specifics here. Basically, it is just a minor security update. On June the 30th Apple released iOS 7.1.2, but this patch version does not yet show up in our metrics. We will cover it's growth in next month's blogpost. Ok, enough talk. Lets get the graphs out! Android 4 keeps on growing. This time around it shows a gain in sessions share across Android apps of 1.12%. With this growth, Android 4 now sits at a very healthy 93.14% session share.

Most notable changes in the minor version department for Android are the gain in session share of Android 4.4 (up from 24.94% to 30.1%) and the decline of session share of Android 4.3 (down from 22.6% to 19.59%). This most likely means that more people have received an update for their 4.3 device to Android 4.4.

If we look at the Android 4.4 session share across Android apps (30.1%) and compare that to the session share of Android 4.4.2 (28.45%) it if fair to say that almost all 4.4's session share is made up out of Android 4.4.2. If we look closely though, we see the newly released Android 4.4.4 update entering the stage at a shy 0.45% session share across Android apps.

The iOS7 session share has fully matured it seems. It is hovering around a 93.5% session share in the last weeks. iOS8 (only available for developers) has a small "spike" in session share in week 23 (0.04%) and 24 (0.07%).

In last month's Landscape update we wrote the following:

iOS7.1's adoption is still struggling a bit. Over 10% of sessions generated from iOS devices is still coming from an iOS7.0 device, and not from a iOS7.1 device. Lets do some math do back this up:

iOS6.1 was released on the 28th of January 2013. At the end of April 2013 it had grown to a 86.86% session share across iOS apps (source). It did this in 92 days.

iOS7.1 was released on the 10th of March 2014. At the end of May 2014 it has grown to a 82.73% session share across iOS apps. It did this in 82 days.

To compete with the iOS6.1 adoption, iOS7 would have to grow almost 3.29% in the next 10 days, it is not very likely that it will catch up.

It is now 30 days later, this means that iOS7.1 was released 112 days ago. It sets a 85.5% session share across iOS apps in week 26. This means it is still lagging behind compared to the adoption of iOS6.1 (iOS6.1 scored an adoption of 86.86% after being released 92 days ago).

The growth of iOS7.1.1 looks matured and is even jumping up and down a bit by in June, landing on 72.77% session share across iOS apps in week 26.

That was it for June's metrics! Stay tuned for July's edition.
