In this episode of "Meet the frogs", we'd like you to meet Maarten. Born and raised on Texel, it is quite likely that he'll ever go back to the largest of the islands in our Wadden Sea. He is a man of the outdoors. If he wasn't helping out shearing sheep ? (isn't that what all people on Texel do? ?), you could find him on the golf course or on the beach. As a real islander he values fresh air and the sense of space and peace. Always in a good mood and having his act together - 'Morning Bitches!' - he brings that cool island swag into the office.
What really matters to him is guarding the balance between work and family life. And we think he's managing it well. The next three weeks he'll be having school holidays, like his little daughter, to make his new house 'home-ready' and go celebrate the island life!
What is your role at aFrogleap?
"Two years ago I started as a Digital producer at aFrogleap, a kind of hybrid role of Scrum master and Product owner. And it's been great so far. But I felt it was time to look for something new within the company. The role of Account manager will be my newest challenge. Expanding business and supporting our accounts to maintain the relationship with our existing clients. It will be less operational and more to the foreground."
What do you like about working here?
"I like the dynamics. There's a focus on doing the things you like. So, that means that there's room for creative minds and change. Exciting times have come for aFrogleap as part of Oxyma, which enables us to grow even more and do even cooler projects."
Any favorite project that you did so far?
"In this past year there have been many cool moments in my work, but the most appreciable moment was that we won the LGI Hacketon that brought us to SXSW. My first time ever in the States! And so, of course, we had to make a stopover in New York too. What a great experience and trip!
Talking about our projects, Eneco is an important client to us and a client with whom we go through highs and lows. A few years ago we started developing the My Eneco app, but ever since we've helped Eneco grow in other directions as well. At this moment we have two of our colleagues working at the Eneco office a couple of days per week. In this project I've also seen chance for myself to develop and grow, and learn so much from the process. Switching to the role of Account manager I will participate in projects more from a client service perspective."
‘Funny facts’ about Maarten? Do you have a 'dark side'?
"My dark side is perhaps that I can be a bit blunt or straightforward. I say it like it is, good or bad. Another thing might be that I can get a bit over-excited sometimes. Then it's like I have blinkers on, which makes that I keep going without minding my surroundings. A 'funny fact' about me, and this is maybe more like a ritual: I take a cold shower every morning in order to wake up!"
Do you have a dream or life motto?
"Life’s a beach! It's just that I love a 'Burgundian' lifestyle and being socially engaged with friends and family, parties and just simply enjoying life. We work to live and not the other way around, right?"
But I do have dreams. I'd like to go on a foreign adventure; a road trip with friends crossing one or more continents, like for example traveling from Amsterdam to Cape Town. And when the time is right, I want to take my daughter Jiuna to the Mount Everest base camp, which is at a height of 5,500 meters, because I made that trip to Tibet myself years ago.
And dreams related to work? It would be awesome to have an opportunity to go abroad for work. Expand our portfolio with international cases and eye-catching projects, which will draw aFrogleap more to the front and get us on stage. Still, the projects that we do now are service oriented and functional."
Since we love mobile, any favorite apps at the moment?
"This is where my other 'dream' comes about: I use the Autoblog app to 'feed' my passion for cars. The app isn't the best around but still it provides me in my daily hunger and love for cars. My wish is to buy and fix an old Datsun somewhere in the future. More and more I try to avoid social apps as I tend to get lost in time while looking to others. This mainly leaves me with only the newsworthy apps, such as the NOS and Guardian app that I use to stay informed."
Maarten is not the only frog that we'd like you to meet. Hear about one of the other frogs here!
